About the Show
La Cage Aux Folles centres on a St.Tropez drag-show nightclub owned by Georges and his long time love, Albin, who headlines as the glamorous Zaza. Together, the couple have raised Georges’ son, the product of a one night fling, but when young Jean-Michel announces his engagement to the daughter of a bigoted, right wing politician and invites her family to meet his ‘normal’ parents, the bonds of family are put to the test as the feather boas fly ! Featuring the ‘notorious and dangerous Cagelles’ and packed with such musical classics as 'I Am What I Am', 'The Best of Times' and of course 'La Cage Aux Folles', LA CAGE is a touching tale of one family's struggle to stay together... stay fabulous... and above all else, stay true to themselves!
An award winning musical, with book by Harvey Fierstein and lyrics & music by Jerry Herman, La Cage Aux Folles is based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret. Made into a film in 1978, it was popular enough to inspire two remakes: the stage musical and, nearly two decades later, the Hollywood comedy The Birdcage with Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and Gene Hackman.
The original 1983 Broadway production received nine Tony Awards nominations, winning six including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. This success spawned a West End production and several international runs. Additional Awards followed, winning the 2004 Tony Award for Best Revival, and in London, the 2008 Laurence Oliviere Award for Best Musical Revival. The 2010 Broadway revival was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, again winning Best Revival of a Musical, making it the only musical to win the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical twice. La Cage Aux Folles is the only show that has won a Best Production Tony Award (Best Musical or Best Revival of a Musical) for each of its Broadway productions. |
